Wireless Network Setups

The popularity of wireless network setups can be widely attributed to its low setup costs, its convenience, and its ease of use. Most new laptops and computers today are sold with all the wireless networking technology built-in.

Wireless Network Setup

If your computer does not have a pre-equipped wireless adapter you may purchase one for very little money. There is a wide variety of equipment to choose from.

Here are a couple examples of the different types.

  • Wireless USB adapter:
    • These adapters are simple to install, you simply plug it into an open USB port and use the provided CD to install the appropriate driver.

  • Wireless network card:
    • This adapter is a bit more complicated to install since you have to open up your computer and connect the card into an open PCI slot. You will then need to install the correct driver using the provided CD. It works just like a network card, just without the Network Cables.

  • PCMCIA wireless adapter:
    • These cards simply connect to the laptops PCMCIA port and then the driver has to be installed.

My personal favorite for a wireless network setup is the Wireless USB adapter.  It is extremely easy to set up as you simply plug it in instead of having to open up your computer.  My adapter came with a cable so I can move it around and allow me to locate the strongest signal with ease.  With a wireless network card your range of movement is limited since it is connected directly into the computer case so it may be harder to find the best signal.

What are the benefits of setting up a wireless home network?

Wireless network setups are:

- Convenient: Connecting to a wireless router allows network resources like Internet connections, printers and files to be accessed from virtually anywhere within the home.  It is especially convenient for laptop users because the wireless connection makes it possible to fully enjoy the portability of the laptop.

- Expandable: Wireless networks allow you to easily connect additional computers.  In a wired network additional wiring would be needed.

- Productive: From a business point of view wireless network setups allow employees to work efficiently from convenient locations.  Let’s say an employee has to give a presentation at the other side of the city.  Half way there he realizes he forgot to transfer a needed file to his laptop.  He then sees a coffee shop which has a wireless hotspot.  Many coffee shops offer free internet access to their customers.  So the employee connects to the internet and transfers the file to his laptop.  He has just saved a lot of time because of a simple wireless network.
